5Better than Niaspan at 1/10th the cost  Oct 01, 2010
By John G. Frykman "jfrykman"
Most of the bad reviews on this product are from poorly informed reviewers. One reviewer claimed that Slo-Niacin's ingredients lowered HDL. This is nonsense. People, the active ingredient here is Nicotinic Acid, or Niacin. Most people tolerate it very easily, as the delivery system allows it to enter your system Slo-ly. I take 2000 mg a day, 1000 mg in the morning, and 1000 before I go to bed. I was on Crestor and Niaspan (prescription Niacin) at 1000 mg and my cholesterol readings were still not low enough.

My doctor wanted to increase my Niaspan to 2000 mg, but it would have cost me $660 for 90 day's supply, or $2,640 a year. Slo-Niacin at the present dosage will cost me $135!! After 6 weeks after adding Slo-Niacin, my my total cholesterol went from 170 to 149, my HDL went from 42 to 60, my LDL went from 84 to 80, and my triglycerides went from 86 to 42. I have had zero side effects (I do get flushing from plain Nicotinic Acid, but none from Slo-Niacin).

This product has been on the market for over 20 years, and Upsher-Smith, its manufacturer has been manufacturing both non-prescription and prescription medications since 1919. It is a respected and trusted pharmaceutical company.

Niacin does not work for all people, but it does for the vast majority. It has been proven safe and effective in numerous clinical trials, including one at the Mayo clinic in the 1950's.

This isn't snake oil. But if you take over 500 mg, you need to be monitored by a physician. In my case, my liver enzymes actually went DOWN, and are well within normal range.

5It works!  Dec 21, 2009
By Ken01 "Ken01"
My cholesterol was over 240 -- I did not want to go on a prescription drug, with all of their side effects. So my doctor suggested this. It cut my triglicerides in HALF! It did not have a big effect on the total cholesterol #, but it did cut the tryglicerides in half. SO, I also went and got "Cholesterol Care" from this link: [...] and along with this Slo-Niacin, it cut my cholesterol to 195 (I also take Omega 3-6-9). So far, so good!

5Slo-Niacin  Jun 21, 2010
By John A. Randolph
I've been on Niaspan for several years, then our insurance company changed the reimbursement so I switched to Slo-Niacin last year. Prior to going on Niaspan my HDL was below 30, after switching to Niaspan my HDL went to over 50. After switching to Slo-Niacin my HDL is still 56. My doctor does Liver tests on a regular basis and I have had no problems.

Great product without the prescription cost. They even look like the Niaspan tablets.

2No release  Sep 12, 2010
By B. Farber "Engnrng"
Started taking this to increase HDL. In the first two weeks, I noticed twice undigested tablet in the toilet (who looks at their poop? It is hard to miss a bright pink pill when you turn to flush!). Obviously, this controlled release is only helping our sewer system! I am now looking for another brand. I eat lots of fiber, so things move through me quickly. Everyone is different... If you feel a flush, at least you know it is working. You should take after a meal if flush occurs.

5Good alternative to the real Brand Niaspan  Sep 25, 2011
By Dixit S. Suthar "Dixit"
Niaspan is pretty expensive with or without a prescription plan. Without a plan its rediculously expensive. And there is no generics on it yet.

Ive tried others but none work like this one and also have almost the same properties of Niaspan. My Wifes a pharmacist and she feels all the other ones are not actually controlled release even though they say it is. Also if you read the breakdown you will normally see that a 500mg tablet actually only has 400mg of Niacin, the other 100mg of something else.

EDIT 10/18/2011
So after posting the original review above on 9/25/11, I just had my annual physical and blood work done. My HDL went from 30 to now 43. My Triglycerides went from 242 to 97. This stuff is clearly the best alternative to actual Niaspan (which I was on for two years). I still take the 2000mg amount (4 of these tablets) and dont have any flushing issues, others may though. My father in law cant even take 500mg without breaking into massive flushing issues and skin turning all red, so its not for everyone as certain people can not tolerate the 2500% of Daily Intake of Vitamin B12 per 500mg pill.
