If you lift weights, you need these. Mar 26, 2009
By dumbbell These are designed to be an ideal match for the hex style solid dumbbells, but they work perfectly well with any type weighted resistance, including: Olympic and standard weight plates, weight stacks on machines, or whatever else.
If you lift for long enough, at some point your progression (continued addition of weight) will stall on your lifts and you will not be able to complete your desired amount of reps in a given set with the next increment in weight available. This is more likely to happen on smaller isolation movements first, but will happen to all lifts eventually.
Let me give an example using the biceps curl done with dumbbells. You begin with a fairly light weight (say 5lbs.) and every other week you consistently are able to add more weight. After 2 mos. your up to 25lbs. Since the dumbbell sets progress in 5lb. increments the 30lb'ers are your next choice. Let's say you fail this attempt. Well, that 5lb. jump from 25 to 30lbs. is a 20% increase over your previous max. That's a pretty big jump to make. The PlateMates allow you to add 1-1/4lb, making it a jump of only 5%.This is much easier for the body to adapt to, which delays plateaus and extends the progression of your training cycles. I was stuck at this point for over a year until I purchased these. Imagine a year wasted with no progression that didn't have to happen.
Do yourself a favor and buy 2 pairs each of the 5/8lb'ers and the 1-1/4lb'ers. My only negative comment would be the lack of more available sizes. Ideally, I would like to see a set of 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and 1lb'ers. But just one additional size of 1-7/8lb. would be useful. That way I wouldn't need to stack the 2 sizes on the ends of the 'bells which makes for a pretty wide overall unit. Care must be taken to not knock them off when stacked this way on movements like seated dumbbell curls as they tend to brush against the thigh at the bottom of the motion.
They work just as advertised. Jan 13, 2012

Highly recommended. I have Platemates in the 5/8, 1.25, and 2.5 pound sizes. All work perfectly. The magnets are super strong and the Platemates do not fall off of the weight plates or dumbbells (I use them on both). Very well made. They will last you for life.
Incremental weight May 13, 2011
By Glenn A. Mumpower In lifting it is necessary to lift more, or do more reps every workout to maximize gains and avoid plateaus. We cannot always lift an additional 2-1/2 or 5 pounds, but we will find that we can lift a few ounces more. These magnetic weights will work on dumbbells, as well as, the barbell plates. I find that the magnets will attache to the coated plates and dumbbells, also. I went to the hardware store and got some more magnets that will fill the "void" around these training aids.
Indispensable! Apr 08, 2011
By Charles S. Tricou I wish I had thought of this! These PlateMates (and their 1.25-lb big brothers) enable me to progress in weight in most of my exercises nearly every workout (even if it is only 5/8 or 1.25 lbs). I started out rehabilitating a shoulder injury. Micro-loading makes it a LOT easier to do that for rehab work, but these are also useful for pure strength or bodybuilding exercises, too. Read Rippetoe's book "Starting Strength" for a good discussion on linear progression and micro-loading.
These are pricey, but they are so convenient that you will not regret the purchase. For bi-lateral dumbbell exercises you will need (at a minimum) 2 pairs of the 1-1/4 lb plates, and 2 pairs of the 5/8 lb plates. This will enable you to go up in 1-1/4 lb increments. And if you want to go up in 5/8-lb increments, you will actually need 3 pairs of the 5/8-lb PlateMates. If you have two pairs of 1.25-lb PlateMates and a two pairs of 5/8-lb PlateMates you have the ability to do bi-lateral work starting from 5/8 lb up to 3-3/4 lb using only the plate-mates. Which means you don't need to purchase 3-lb, 8-lb, or 12-lb dumbbells.
These will not work with rubber-covered dumbbells. Good Luck and Happy Lifting!

The magnets are just not strong enough Apr 08, 2011
By Andy I'm very disappointed because I can't use these at all because they just don't have enough sticking power. The issue is my gym has a rubber coating on their weights and the magnets aren't strong enough to stick to the weights over this coating. So, they are completely useless to me.
