My X5 has run great for more than 4 years Nov 04, 2011
By C. Mitchell I noticed the grim evaluations of people with electrical and component problems, but my X5 has been running great.
I am fairly tall and heavy and my wife is shorter and much, much lighter, so this was a good solution for us. I also have painful knee problems from long-ago hockey, so striding is comparatively easy on me.
On the X5, you set the stride length manually before starting. The guy complaining about the X8 has a different machine costing $$$$ more which uses small electric motors to adjust the stride length while striding. Complaining about the failure of those X8 adjustment motors is just stupid. It's like have some silly rich guy with a $36,000 car that auto-parks complaining about the failure of that ridiculous feature while reviewing an entry model that costs only $14,000.
Does anybody need an X8? I doubt it. Afterall, when I ride my bikes, I don't feel a need for variable length cranks. I might adjust the seat height and fore-aft position during a stop on long rides, but that's all. Extreme adjustability offered by the X8 just seems like too much complexity.
Anyway, we're seeing excellent durability and performance on our X5 despite regular use. And the console features are just great. Much more fun than a treadmill, and far less pain to my knees.
Luv My X5!!! Mar 18, 2012
By Loving Elliptical Product came with packaging in good condition except for the box with the advanced console. That box was signficantly 'beat up' but on opening, the console appeared intact so proceeded to set up. The follow-up communications by Amazon once purchase made and until product delivered was amazing....GREAT customer service by Amazon. The X5 took about an hour and 2 people to put together but directions for set-up were clear and easy to follow. Saved me lots of cost for set-up. X5 is very quiet and smooth. I now can keep my TV in my exercise room at low volume while I work out (previously w/ treadmill volume had to be on 'max' and it was still hard to hear over the noise of treadmill) The Advanced Workouts Console is awesome as it gives me a wide variety of work-out programs and tracks my work-outs to help me easily see my improvement. I was worried about the length of the cross-trainer but in end was no longer than my treadmill. Overall very very satisfied with this purchase!

problem with stride design, otherwise great May 28, 2010
By Lisa T We bought a Life Fitness x7 february 2009. by december a cable had to be replaced because it was frayed causing stride malfunction. The repairman said it shouldn't happen again but pointed out that he wasn't redoing the placement of it, just replacing what was damaged. It was damaged because the design of it is wrong. He acknowledged and said he'd seen it many times before. I was skeptical for good reason. It's happened again and now we're out of warranty. Let's see how Life Fitness takes care of this. They should fix it for permanence and not charge us for their design flaw. Don't y'think? Otherwise, it's a nice machine. Why they cheaped out with this important, but small part, I don't understand.

LIFE FITNESS IS UNRELIABLE Apr 08, 2010
By Stephen Friedman I purchased the Life Fitness X8 Elliptical Cross Trainer with the advanced console seven weeks ago. The Whisper eStride technology boasts a remarkably quiet, fluid electronic stride. However, my machine made a grinding sound with perceptible vibration. It was not comfortable to use for 30 minutes.
The activity zone module stride length was a major factor for my purchase since it would allow me to vary the distance from 18" to 24" to target different lower body muscle groups. In less that two months, one of the motors malfunctioned and the machine cannot be used due to the disparate stride lengths. I cannot recommend Life Fitness due to the poor construction and unreliability.
