It really works! Nov 14, 2007

I was surprised that this actually works. You just click the little button in it, and instant heat!
The button causes a reaction, and the liquid chrystalizes and is hot.
Then you have to boil it in hot water for 8 minutes or so and it is back to the liquid form.
This is the smallest size, and it lasts for about 30-45 minutes. There are larger sizes that will last longer.

Nice value, very 'handy' to have around. Jan 17, 2011
By Jeremy I'm a piano player / computer gamer and have long skinny fingers (they get cold very easily in the winter, despite being in my 20s) with a history of carpal tunnel / repetitive stress injury, having warm hands is absolutely critical for being able to function optimally and to help deter damage to your valuable hands.
They are based with Sodium Acetate which is a food-safe ingredient. If your pet or small child decides to bite a hole in it, I doubt they would it would have any serious consequences. The liquid crystallizes at room temperature when you hit the metal trigger and releases heat during the conversion. When it's finished crystalizing, it turns solid until you boil it in water until all the crystals melt. There is no chemical reaction or expended resources inside the pads, it simply changes from a solid to a liquid and back again to function. This means it never 'runs out'. When you boil them to reset the cycle, be careful to not let the pads touch the bottom of the pan, which can easily burn or weaken the plastic. I put a dish rag under them when boiling to keep them from burning. They will last as long as you keep the vinyl from leaking, which seams to be well sealed.

Handy but short-lived Jun 13, 2011
By A. Foster I used to see these in pharmacies for about 4-5 dollars each all the time years ago, then didn't see them for years. My daughter has early-morning swim meets and I thought these would be good for her to keep her hands warm. They are well-made and work as advertised, but any actual useful heat lasts for maybe 20 minutes.
Not so Hot! Jan 14, 2012
By diane l. weisenberg I am returning them due to the fact they never heat up. They simply do not work and I am greatly disappointed as they were a gift for a senior family member. HEAT WAVE Instant Reusable Hand Warmers - 1 pair

"I bought this..."
These hand warmers are absolutely amazing. They say they're filled with a super saturated sodium acetate solution but I know what's really going on. It's really some Kurt Vonnegut Cat's Cradle Ice Nine stuff there. Really these things are amazing. They're just like regular hand warmers but you don't throw them out, you just recharge them by boiling them. The only complaint I have is once they're recharged it's so cool to watch them react I'm tempted to trigger them by pressing that lil button. *Note to anyone buying these* When you recharge them put away from anyone until you intent to use them you, you friends and family will be tempted to trigger them before you're out on the slopes.
