Arthritis Anti-Venom Nov 09, 2010
By T.R. There are two main drugs of interest for me in Cosamin DS Joint Health Supplement, Capsules, 210-Count Bottle: glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate. Not wanting to jump on the band-wagon and throw just anything in my mouth because a bottle said it was helpful, I did a little digging to see if there really is anything to this stuff. Here's a bit of what I found...
-a 2009 review of available studies concluded that glucosamine sulfate, glucosamine hydrochloride, and chondroitin sulfate used individually only inconsistently decreases arthritis pain. However, many studies have confirmed arthritis pain relief when you take glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate together.
-studies have consistently reported that glucosamine appears safe
-a review by Bruyere et al. about glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate for the treatment of knee and hip osteoarthritis concludes that both products act as valuable symptomatic therapies for arthritis and have some potential structure-modifying effects
-the OsteoArthritis Research Society International is recommending chondroitin sulfate as the second-most-effective treatment for moderate cases of osteoarthritis
-the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) supports using chondroitin sulfate in the management of knee osteoarthritis
Well, I'm pretty much sold. I encourage people who have arthritis to give it a try. It's not a big investment if it doesn't help you, but it may be one of the best investments you ever made if it does help! Those with knee arthritis should also check out Treat Your Own Knee Arthritis- cosamin helps with pain but does nothing to strengthen your knee muscles and make your knee more flexible.

Cosamin DS Mar 24, 2006
By Susan C. Pemberton My husband has been using this product for a decade. His Orthopedic Surgeon recommended this brand only and told him to stay away from other similar products because they don't work as efficiently. His hip needs to be replaced and with the use to Cosamin DS he has gotten so much relief that he has been able to put off the replacement for 10 years...and still counting. It isn't a quick fix though. It took about 4 months of using the product before he saw increased mobility and decreased pain. He swears by this product and never misses a dose.

Only brand that works for me. Sep 06, 2006
By M. Ureta For three years I took Schiff's, then Members Mark (Sam's Club own brand), and finally NOW, and the pain in my knees got to be excruciating. I couldn't take a step without cringing. After reading the reviews for this brand I gave it a try. I am astonished at its efficacy. The very next morning the pain was gone. I gardened all day and the next morning there was no pain either. If you are about to give up on glucosamine, don't, give this brand a try instead.

Cosamin DS, A PROVEN JOINT HEALTH SUPPLEMENT Aug 24, 2005
By Robert Fredricks Upon the recommendation of a doctor, I began taking Cosamin DS five years ago for my deteriorating knee joint. Within weeks the knee pain gradually disappeared. My knee no longer is a concern. I have recommended this product to others with joint problems. Most of them have had similar results.

Best on Market Jun 27, 2006
By AJames My rheumatologist (and med school professor) says he thinks everyone over 50 ought to take this supplement -- but only this particular brand. Despite recent reports that glucosamine/chondroitin generally may be ineffective, he continues to recommend it because the fed govt (NIH? not sure which agency) did a well-designed study of this actual brand and found it effective. My understanding is that, while it may sometimes cause new cartilage growth, it is most useful for minimizing future cartilage loss, i.e., it's primarily effective as a preventative supplement.
