These USED to be great. Just ordered a replacement for one i purchased one to two years ago and the difference in quality is incredible. The new one was very thin and cheaply made. I phoned Chattanooga to see if perhaps I mis-ordered. The story I got was that due to the war, they had to use a cheaper quality canvas and since the canvas was flimsy, they had to use less filler. Sounded like a story to me in a fantastic attempt to substitute inferior quality and cut costs but retain the price of their product. Play the patriotism card and no one will complain! Two red, white and blue thumbs down Chattanooga!

WAY too much trouble to use - completely inconvenient Feb 12, 2010

I bought this to use as a hot pack. When I got it, the instructions say that, before you use it, you have to soak it in a large pan in water for 2 hours. OK. I did that, weighting it down with a bowl, and after several hours, put it in the dish rack to drain the excess water off. I imagined that then I could microwave it to warm it up. Nope!
When you go to use it, it turns out that every single time you want to use it, you have to, either in the microwave or on the stovetop, heat it up in a container completely covered with water. Hunh???
I expected something that held its moisture, and unless you had dried it out somehow, could just be microwaved each time you wanted to use it.
But the instructions say - put it in a large container completely covered with water, heat until the water temperature reaches 160 deg. F. So- you're also supposed to heat it, watch it, and measure the temperature while it's heating? Then you're supposed to "carefully remove" this hot large dripping wet pack from the pot of hot water.
Then they mention that you are also required to separately buy a cover from them, and put it in that.
I really wish that the info for this said you would have to heat it, in water, each time - I *never* would have considered it. When you want a hot pack, I didn't want to go through a long complex process with a pot of boiling water to get the thing hot. If anybody can recommend a good quality simple hot pack, please do.

At the physical therapy place they have these, except they keep them in a big machine where they sit in very hot water. Now, using these packs, you can get the same benefit- except you'll have to boil them in water to get them hot.
I recommend them for anyone who has arthritis (and get the neck one if you have knee arthritis as it wraps around the knee better than the square ones). These packs are just a great way to provide heat to arthritic joints. While the pain relief may be temporary, using them before you do your exercises makes the exercises go a whole lot easier. Also recommend Jane Fonda: Prime Time - Fit & Strong if you have arthritis and want a gentle but effective whole body conditioning program.

I use these neck packs in my acupuncture practice. Not only do I use them for the neck, but I also use them for feet, low backs, or any place that needs a little moist heat. They wrap around body parts nicely. My patients love the way they feel. I cover them with cheap towels. At least three layers of towel are needed,cause these babies get hot!
