Solid performance pilates mat Aug 11, 2011

After extensively researching pilates mats, I bought the 3/8" Aeromat Elite Pilates mat (not on Amazon) with carrying strap, and I've been extremely pleased. The mat stays in place and is thick enough that you can do kneeling and "roll like a ball" exercises without feeling discomfort in your joints or spine. I would not recommend getting a 1/4" mat because it won't be thick enough for pilates. The 1/2" seemed uneccesarily thick and bulky to me, but the 3/8" is perfect - cushiony enough and not so bulky that you wouldn't want to carry it around. The interlocking foam bounces back into place when you've been pressing down in one area, so no dents or depression marks. The mat is pretty sturdy even for jumping exercises (though I always exercise barefoot or with socks). The velcro from the straps do not get in the way when lying down because they're on the other side of the mat. Because the mat is non-porous, drops of sweat do collect on the surface, which can make things slippery for plank pose, but it's easy enough to wipe off with a towel. You should regularly wipe the mat down with a damp paper towel after sweaty workouts to avoid stickiness from dried sweat at the next workout.
The only reason why I didn't rate the mat 5 stars is because there is a slight rubber smell that even after a month of use is still there. However, its very slight and despite reviews on similar mat smells, it never came close to giving me a headache. I never bothered leaving it open overnight to air it out because it isn't that bothersome. The other thing is that one end of the mat is hard to flatten because of storing it rolled up, so it stays curled, but this does not get in my way at all. I am 5'1" and lying down, I'm on the mat head to toe w/ at least 6" of extra space. The only final reason that a star was taken away is because there isn't actually a "carrying strap." There's two straps to keep the mat rolled up securely, but there isn't actually a strap by which you could comfortably carry the mat. You'd have to connect something between the two straps to be able to carry it over your shoulder. Otherwise, a great quality, solid performing pilates mat!
